Training

Effort Values are the trained half of a stat. IVs are luck and never change; EVs are earned, up to 252 in a single stat and 510 across all six, and they are the only part of a pocket monster's stats you can still raise after you catch it.

Two ceilings, and the choice between them

One stat takes at most 252 EVs, and all six together take at most 510 — which is less than six full stats on purpose. You can max 2 stats and have 6 left over, so training is a decision about what this pocket monster is for, not a checklist.

Term = floor(EV ÷ 4)                     252 EV → +63
Cap = 252 per stat, 510 in total

EVs are divided by four before they reach the stat, so 252 EVs add 63 to the base-and-IV term — the same place an IV lands, and scaled by level in the same way.

What a fully trained stat is worth

Training is multiplied by level exactly as an IV is, so it is worth nothing at level 1 and the most at level 100 — train late, or train something you intend to keep levelling. A base-100 stat with its IV at 31 and a neutral nature, untrained against 252 EVs:

Level Untrained Fully trained Gain
1 7 7 0
25 62 78 +16
50 120 152 +32
75 178 225 +47
100 236 299 +63

HP is the exception. Its curve is flatter than the others by design, so the same 252 EVs that add 63 to any other stat at level 100 add 42 to HP.

The vitamins

Vitamins are the only thing that raises EVs — defeating a pocket monster does not train it here. Each one feeds a fixed stat, and its own page says how much it grants.

Vitamin Raises
Calcium Sp. Atk, Sp. Def
Carbos Speed
HP Up HP
Iron Defense
Protein Attack

Calcium is the odd one: this game splits the original Special stat into two, so it feeds both halves at once and costs twice as much of your 510 budget.

Changing your mind

Training can be wiped for Gold, at the Professor, which sets all six back to zero and lets you start again. A trained pocket monster also sells for a little more than an untrained one — but never for more than the vitamins that trained it were worth, so training something in order to flip it is a loss.

What training does not do

Training does not change a pocket monster's IV percentage, its quality, its nature or its tier — those are rolled at capture and stay exactly as they were. And EVs are not a VIP perk: a subscription cannot raise them, cannot raise the ceilings, and cannot make a vitamin worth more.
