Battle Mechanics & Moves

How combat works in real time — cooldowns, the smart rotation, stat stages, ailments, and every move effect.

PokeAFK combat is real-time, not turn-based. Every move has a cooldown, and using any move triggers a short global cooldown that locks all of your moves, WoW-style. That global cooldown comes from Speed — one second flat, dropping toward a floor of 0.75s the faster your pocket monster is, so a speedy attacker genuinely rotates through its moves quicker. Damage uses the classic pocket monster formula — level, Attack or Sp. Attack vs the defender's matching defense, STAB, and type effectiveness. All 164 gen-1 moves now work in combat, each with its real mechanics.

Stat changes: moves like Growl, Tail Whip, and Swords Dance move a stat up or down in stages from -6 to +6, with the classic multipliers. Accuracy and evasion stages shift the to-hit roll. Mist blocks incoming stat drops, and Haze resets everyone's stages. Stages last until the pocket monster leaves battle or is switched.

Status conditions: burn, poison, toxic, paralysis, freeze, and sleep — plus confusion (a chance to hurt yourself instead of acting), trapping moves like Wrap and Fire Spin (rooted in place with damage over time), and Leech Seed (drains HP to the opposing pocket monster). Paralysis also slows movement. Pure status moves like Sleep Powder and Thunder Wave apply their condition directly — type immunities still apply, so Thunder Wave does nothing to a Ground type.

Damaging-move extras now land too: Absorb-line moves drain HP, Double-Edge and Take Down recoil, Fury Attack hits 2-5 times, Headbutt and Bite can flinch (briefly delaying the target's next action), Slash and Razor Leaf crit far more often, and Sonic Boom, Dragon Rage, Seismic Toss, Night Shade, and Super Fang deal their signature fixed damage. Guillotine, Horn Drill, and Fissure are one-hit KOs — low accuracy, a long cooldown, and they fail against higher-level targets.

Special moves have real-time versions: Solar Beam, Dig, Fly, and other charge moves wind up before landing (Dig and Fly dodge attacks while underground or airborne), Counter returns double a recent physical hit, Bide stores damage and releases it doubled, Substitute spends a quarter of your HP on a decoy that also blocks ailments, Reflect and Light Screen halve incoming physical or special damage, Rest fully heals with a short self-sleep, Disable locks the opponent's last move, and Transform, Mimic, Mirror Move, and Metronome copy or improvise moves. Pay Day earns bonus Gold on every defeat while equipped.

In farm zones your pocket monster runs a smart rotation on its own: it heals when hurt, opens with a debuff or an ailment on a fresh target, keeps buffs topped up, and otherwise picks its hardest-hitting move by expected damage and type matchup. In the PvP Arena nothing is automatic — every equipped move is cast manually from the skill bar, including all the tricks above.
